How do you even choose the right editor these days?

I’ve been searching for book editors near me because I’m finally polishing my first manuscript, but the options are overwhelming. Everyone seems to offer something different, and I can’t figure out what really matters most in good book editing. For those who’ve worked with editors before, what’s your best suggestion? What should I look for to make sure my book ends up in the right hands?
