Hi everyone, I’m hoping some fellow Volvo owners can help me figure this out because I feel like I’m getting pushed around by the dealership and I don’t know what’s actually true. I have a 2017 Volvo XC60 that has been a great car, very reliable and comfortable for my family. But last week the battery started acting up, slower cranking in the morning and the start stop feature stopped working completely. I called the dealership to ask about a replacement and they quoted me a price that seemed really high. When I asked why it costs so much they told me that Volvos have a sophisticated battery management system that needs to be reprogrammed whenever you install a new battery. They said if I just put in a new battery without doing the computer reset, the car will still think the old battery is installed and will either overcharge or undercharge the new one which will ruin it within a year. That sounds kind of believable but also sounds like exactly the kind of thing a dealership would say to make you pay them instead of going somewhere else. I started looking online to see if independent shops can do this computer reset and I found a company that specializes in European cars. Their website says they have all the proper diagnostic tools and they even have a whole page about Volvo battery replacement. I was going to just visit website and book an appointment but then I started wondering if this computer reset thing is even necessary at all. I asked a friend who used to own a BMW and he said his car needed a battery registration but he wasn’t sure about Volvos. Another friend who drives a Toyota said he just swaps batteries himself and never had any issues. So now I’m really confused. Is the computer reset a real requirement for Volvos or is the dealership just making things up to scare me into paying their high prices? Has anyone here replaced the battery in their Volvo without doing any kind of computer reset and had it work fine for years? Or did you have problems later because the car’s computer didn’t know the battery was new? I really don’t want to damage my car but I also don’t want to pay extra for something that might be completely unnecessary. Any honest advice from Volvo owners who have been through this would mean a lot to me. Thanks so much in advance.
